Alternative Energy

The villages of Mewat, which are just a few kilometers away from the city of Gurgaon, continue to survive in the dark with dim lights in their homes and absolutely no street lights. Despite the fact that these villages are connected to the public electricity supply, several villagers manage with illegal connections, which further burdens the power supply and exposes them to risks of electrocution. Erratic power supply and low voltage plague the area. On an average, power supply is available for about 7-8 hours per day at indefinite intervals. Due to the lack of electricity, farmers frequently rely on polluting diesel engines to thresh harvests or mill flour. Finally, the lack of lights in the village makes the streets unsafe after nightfall.

To provide a sustainable solution to this state of affairs, the Foundation has launched an alternative energy program that aims to harness the potential of renewable resources.

Activities in progress:

Provision of solar-powered streetlights

Street lights make a world of difference to life in the village in general, and in particular to women’s lives. In the village it is common practice to use the surrounding fields as a large open-air toilet, however, women can only relieve themselves during the night or very early in the morning for fear of being seen. In addition, with stray animals often roaming the fields at night and the poor quality of streets makes it extremely unsafe after sunset.
The phased introduction of solar lighting, in the Foundation’s model villages has made the streets safer. So far, three solar street lights have been installed in Ghagas village, one in Karheda and two each in Agon and Rangalla, the responsibility of maintaining these solar powered lights lies with the panchayants.
