IRRAD invites interns and volunteers to join us in the cause of rural development by sharing their skills and experience for empowering people in rural areas. University o Iowa India Winterim Course Traveling to India was a revelation for the students who participated in the recent International Perspectives in Water Sciences and Management study-abroad course, organized by Marian Muste and Nandita Basu, research engineers at IIHR—Hydroscience & Engineering College. The study-abroad course took 13 students from a range of University of Iowa academic departments to India in January 2012. In India, the group embarked on an ambitious project: “Salty or Sweet—Exploring the Challenges of Groundwater Salinization within a Sustainable Framework.” Most of the course activities were conducted in cooperation with the Institute of Rural Research and Development (IRRAD). Read full story Alice Huang The purpose of my World Food Prize internship was to gain a better understanding of the issues that subsistence farmer’s face and the potential solutions. In this respect, the relevance of the project was excellent. Not only did I have the opportunity to experiment on a recharge well model, I was able to interview women in several villages and see first-hand how these water interventions impacted subsistence farmers on the grassroots level. My overall satisfaction with my project is very high "excellent." I particularly appreciate the multi-dimensional perspective I gained on the issue of water scarcity from both the scientific and social science perspective. My project mentors helped me develop a project with multiple objectives and add depth to my perspective. They provided me with strong guidance, spending many hours with me to develop my project, arrange field visits, and answer my questions. Their expertise was invaluable to my research.
