The Sehgal Foundation Conducts Water Literacy Street Theatre

July 14, 2007

The Sehgal Foundation working for rural empowerment in Mewat and Kurukshetra district of Haryana has come up with a novel idea of promoting the judicial utilization of water by organizing street theatre activities in village Karheda, Jaffarabad, Dingarhedi and Bhond. The street theatre took place on two days, 14 th and 15 th July. The aim was to impart awareness to the villagers on the importance of conserving water. The script was gripping and in a simple way it could convey the right message with humor and

emotions. The incidents in the play were taken from the every day life of the villagers for enable them to relate to it and to help them question that why there is a need to change? The street theatre group of Deepalaya helped the foundation to organize the same. The idea of having a street theatre in place was conceived by the Program Leader for Water management, Lalit Sharma.

He said, “Continuous and consistent efforts from our side will certainly have a recall value for the villagers and it would go a long way in solving the water problem.” The foundation is trying to use all possible tools to spread the message around. The tools that can help us in water conservation include roof water harvesting, soak pits, constructing recharge wells, spreading ideas how the water can be saved where ever we use it etc. The presentation of

live demonstrations of these tools through models of roof water harvesting and water penetration in soil was also given after the play for the better understanding of the viewers and to explain them that how a small intervention can get them big results.

“The street theatre is an effective means to disseminate the information and at the same time it is entertaining”, said the Sarpanch of Jaffrabad.

There was a huge footfall at each location and the message went out clear. The next step in line will be to keep this awareness alive and for this the Sehgal foundation will be distributing handouts to the villagers to emphasize on the ways of conserving water.
