Message from the Executive Director |

The word ‘tipping point’ often used in the climate change seminars these days means "the point at which a slow, reversible change becomes irreversible, often with dramatic consequences". Scientific evidences suggest that the world is reaching its tipping point as humanity's footprint stretches the Earth's natural resources to their limit.
Climate change is the biggest concern of the present day generation. Moreover it has all the necessary ingredients to qualify as the most debatable topic, much more than rural development and poverty reduction due to its unbiased effect. Climate change is a phenomenon that needs to be curtailed as it will eventually make survival of mankind a big problem to grapple with. The only way to tackle this is to take environment seriously.
As a step towards being an environment conscious organization we have made climate change and environment part and parcel of each of our rural development activities. I urge others to partner with us in bringing the change and to start somewhere we all can make conscious choice to deviate away from “use and throw” culture and move towards more environmentally sustainable practices.
We must also practice what we preach and therefore, we have constructed the Institute of Rural Research and Development (IRRAD) environment friendly, for which we are expecting to get platinum level LEEDS certification. The institute is self sufficient in terms of energy and water coupled with various other green features.
The role and responsibility of each of us as individuals cannot be overestimated. We hold the world in trust for future generations and we have to act now if we are to avert the ‘tipping point’..

World Environment Day Celebrations
There is a sufficiency in the world for man's need but not for man's greed. ~Mohandas K. Gandhi.
Look after our planet and it will look after us, or don’t and face the consequences. When habitats are destroyed, biodiversity is lost, or natural resources are depleted, the environment is hurt. Human processes play a major role in environmental degradation. World Environment Day is commemorated each year with an international exposition through the week of June 5.
Holding the flag of environment conscious communities high, IRRAD took the lead in initiating environment friendly practices by observing the day in 17 focus villages. More....

a) Training on Waste Management in Jyotisar
Jyotisar, a village in Kurukshetra district of Haryana, is known for its historical significance, the birthplace of Gita. Even though such a prominent part of the Hindu mythology, Jyotisar scores low on account of poor hygiene and sanitation.
When we started the implementation of Integrated Sustainable Village Development (ISVD) model in Jyotisar, only 400 toilets in 978 households existed. The objective behind the training was to explain the concept and importance of waste (liquid and solid waste) and to ensure a clean and ‘open defecation free’ village with 100% sanitary latrine coverage. c) Metamorphosis in Notki
The development of a village is an extensive and a time consuming process due to the acceptability of the community. IRRAD has 17 focus villages, where extensive efforts are being made to implement the ISVD model and build the capacity of the villagers to take the development process in their own hand. Every model needs a demonstration for replication and therefore, IRRAD has initiated to develop Notki village in Mewat as a demonstration village since it has a favorable Panchayat and positive community.
The process of making a demonstration village involves community at all levels such that the Panchayat (the local government body) and the community can become self reliant in their own development. More…
