TARA Akshar does not require external trainers. The package can be deployed by literate members of local communities, after they have received training from TARA Akshar. The Sehgal Foundation has identified Instructors who can in-turn train the community at the local level. The project can run from The Sehgal Foundation’s community center at Ghaghas. This will further help the villagers to take part in the literacy

At the core, TARA Akshar is a customized Hindi software based on memory techniques. The software is run on computers that can be used in any location. The package also has an offline component including workbooks and flash cards. The TARA Akshar software has been designed to enable visual and aural recognition of alphabets. The syllabus includes introduction to alphabet along with their link to Grammar (18 days) and then reading (12 days). Each participant is provided with a learner’s kit during the course and a certificate after the completion. The ideal age group for the participant is between 8-50 yrs

About the Sehgal Foundation:

The Sehgal foundation is a trust established in 1999 to work for rural empowerment in the Mewat district of Haryana being one of the most backward areas of the state. The foundation from time to time undertakes programmes covering the five core areas that constitute the mission of the organization viz. Water Management, Rural health, Income Enhancement, Family Life Education and Alternative energy.

The foundation works on the ISVD model (Integrated and Sustainable Village Development) to make the villages self- sufficient. The development work is going on in 23 villages covering various areas. Various centers have been established by the foundation to facilitate the process and acting as harbingers of change.

The Sehgal foundation is in the process of building an Institute of Rural Research and Development (IRRAD) in Gurgaon, Haryana. Taking advantage of the inherent synergy between learning, training, and outreach, IRRAD will have three centers: one for rural research in collaboration with universities and colleges; one for the training of Village Champions in rural development; and the third for rural policy and governance studies and advice to policymakers. IRRAD will lead by example, putting the latest knowledge and technology into use. It is a ‘smart’ facility combining simplicity of design with environmentally-friendly technologies.
