In 1999, S M Sehgal Foundation (SMSF), was established in Gurgaon (now Gurugram) Haryana, India, a new NGO with a distinctive entrepreneurial and socially inclusive approach to rural development, and a particular vision for addressing the greatest needs faced by impoverished villages in rural India.The founders Dr. Suri Sehgal and his wife Edda Sehgal, committed the majority of the proceeds from the sale of their successful seed business (Proagro Group) in 1998, to establish two nonprofit foundations, with the intention to give back to Suri%u2019s country of origin. They first established a 501(c)(3) private foundation in the US called Sehgal Foundation in 1998 in the Iowa state followed by another one in India called the S M Sehgal Foundation that is committed to work in rural areas. To start with, both foundations were philanthropic organizations, directing donations to other nonprofits with shared values related to environmental protection and sustainability, food and water security, and poverty alleviation.Dr Suri Sehgal with the team at field2
