                                    The first phase of operations in rural communities began in the nearby villages of Mewat (now Nuh), a severely impoverished region in Haryana. The region had poor healthcare resources, water shortages, outdated agriculture practices, widespread illiteracy, and was considered by the Government of India to be one of the most %u201cbackward%u201d regions of India.To deal with the age-old local, ingrained myths, and a traditionally unequal society, rural citizens and their villagelevel institutions had to be strengthened and supported with knowledge, skills, and inspiration to take charge of their own destiny.
