S M Sehgal Foundation
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

S M Sehgal Foundation ("Sehgal Foundation") is a public, charitable trust registered in India since 1999. Our mission is to strengthen community-led development initiatives to achieve positive social, economic and environmental change across rural India.

With a singular vision: "every person across rural India empowered to lead a more secure and prosperous life", the founders, Surinder "Suri" and Edda Sehgal, wanted to give back to Suri's native country after a distinguished career in the global seed industry, and so established the Sehgal Family Foundation in the United States in 1998 and the S M Sehgal Foundation in India a year later.

Based in Gurgaon, Haryana, Sehgal Foundation works primarily in the remote, semi-arid regions of Haryana and Rajasthan. To date, we have reached nearly 500,000 people in 464 villages, and by 2017 we will expand to Bihar and aim to reach over one million people.

With support from our donors and partners in the corporate, government and social sectors, the organization advances its mission by working with rural communities to increase agricultural productivity, manage water resources, strengthen grassroots democracy and facilitate citizen participation through good rural governance and community media, putting a strong emphasis on gender equality and women's empowerment.

To direct our resources toward its greatest impact, Sehgal Foundation employs a rights-based approach driven by the realization that human rights are central to developing human potential. Through research and dialogue, we design and deliver rural development interventions that create opportunity, build resilience and provide solutions for India's poorest communities to overcome their most pressing social, economic and environmental challenges.

As an emerging knowledge leader on rural development issues in India, we rely on participatory research and impact assessment as a rigorous strategy and a practical tool for informed action, results and learning. The organization has a dedicated team who collect, assess and report both qualitative and quantitative data across an array of development outcomes, and is building a base of evidence-based research to bridge the gap between listening and incorporating the voices and views of rural communities.

We believe that with the appropriate support from civil society organizations and the government, rural communities not only will be capable of transforming awareness into action, but will be mobilized to develop their own vision for development, ultimately leading to a more dignified life.
