INSTITUTE OF RURAL RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Institute of Rural Research and Development (IRRAD) is an initiative of S.M. Sehgal Foundation. The Foundation, registered as a trust since 1999, furthers the wellbeing of rural communities in India.

IRRAD engages with communities in the areas of natural resource management, income enhancement (primarily small-scale agriculture), education, health and sanitation, capacity building, and rural governance to improve current conditions and future prospects for India’s rural communities. IRRAD also conducts rural research as a premier knowledge institute for rural development and poverty reduction in India.

For the past 10 years, IRRAD has focused on developing innovative, replicable models on water, sanitation and hygiene; agricultural income enhancement; and rural governance. Each of these models, flexible by design, is made up of smaller components, or modules that can stand alone or be combined to suit local needs. We strongly believe that replicable and sustainable models/modules can be adapted to local conditions in other parts of India and beyond. We conduct quantitative and qualitative research and testing as part of the design, evaluation, and refinement of these models/modules. IRRAD has initially worked with communities in district Mewat, Haryana, where it has established a rural community center in village Ghaghas. At the center, IRRAD conducts training, hosts community-oriented events and broadcasts Alfaz-e-Mewat community radio. IRRAD increasingly works with communities in other Haryana districts and in other states on specific projects..

We believe that villagers must be skilled and empowered to secure basic needs and seize opportunities for continuous improvement of their wellbeing. IRRAD enables villagers to lead dignified life, focusing on knowledge sharing, skill and confidence building, participation, and developing collective leadership for promoting community-led development.

IRRAD’s efforts have been recognised by many organizations. It has been named as “Best Water NGO” by UNESCO and Water Digest for three consecutive years (2007-2009). It won the National Ground Water Augmentation Award for Best NGO, northern zone (2009). IRRAD holds a Special Consultative Status with United Nations Economic and Social Council and membership with the Clinton Global Initiative. Our mission for the next decade is to scale up the proven models/modules with willing partners in the public, private and nonprofit sectors.
