My name is Kamal, a Class 9 student at Government Senior Secondary School, Bhajeda. I have one sister and one brother. My father, Daulat Ram, earns a living by selling milk. My mother, Kavita, is a homemaker. I want to share how the digital library at my school opened up new opportunities for me.
Earlier, our school did not have any computer facilities. When a digital library was established with the support of S M Sehgal Foundation, it gave me an opportunity to learn something I had never had access to before.
I was not selected for the first batch of students, but my name was included in the second batch. I was very happy when I got the opportunity to join the library. Since then, I have not missed a single computer class.
My teacher, Preeti Ma’am, explains everything patiently, and I listen carefully. She has taught us Paint, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and several other basic computer tools and skills. I have created different Excel sheets using formulas, and prepared mark sheets and sheets involving addition, multiplication, and subtraction. I have also created PowerPoint presentations. When visitors come to our school and see my presentations, their appreciation for my work, and their encouragement, makes me feel proud of what I have learned.
When the internet classes began, we learned how to download documents such as Aadhaar and PAN cards, understand the information and queries associated with them, and check examination results online. I downloaded my own Aadhaar card and showed it to my family at home. They were very happy to see that I could do it on my own. Today, I now use mobile applications, access the internet, and manage many online tasks without depending on someone else.
The digital library has taught me much more than computer skills. The life-skills awareness sessions have also helped me become more confident. Earlier, I was very shy and found it difficult to speak to people. Sessions on feelings, communication, and other life skills helped me overcome my hesitations. I can now express my thoughts confidently in front of others and explain things to them as well.
One session that made a particular difference to me was the session on goals and plans. It encouraged me to think seriously about what I want to do in the future. I have set this goal for myself: I want to become a good teacher and continue learning about computers so that I can do something meaningful for the children in my village.
Whenever visitors come to Bhajeda, they make a point to visit the digital library. They often ask me what I have learned. When they can see how much I have learned in such a short time, it motivates me to keep learning and improve further.
I have also participated in the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMS) quiz and received a government scholarship of ₹48,000. This achievement is a matter of great pride for me and my family.
The digital library has given me more than access to a computer, this has given me the confidence to learn, communicate, and imagine a future that I had not thought about before. I hope to continue building my computer skills, become a good teacher, and use what I learn to help other children in my village.
