Gayatri from Sunari village, Haryana, lives with her husband and son. They hold a Below Poverty Line (BPL) card as the family depends on daily wages. As houeshold expenses continued to strain the family’s budget, Gayatri was always on the lookout for financial relief through government programs. They found assistance from the Citizen Information and Support Center Helpline (CISC toll-free number 1800-120-2575), operated by S M Sehgal Foundation with the support of Publicis Sapient. While learning about the government programs operating in the area, she was introduced to the PM Surya Ghar Yojana, a Government of India initiative that supports households with financial assistance and subsidies to install rooftop solar systems.
The opportunity immediately caught Gayatri’s attention. Although she was aware of solar energy, she had never considered it a practical option for her family. She always assumed that the installation cost would be beyond her financial means. But with the guidance provided by CISC, she learned about the subsidy benefits available under the program. The team supported her throughout the process, helping with documentation, application formalities, and coordination with the concerned agencies.
After completing the application process under the guidance of CISC, Gayatri’s family successfully installed a rooftop solar system in April 2026, having a capacity of 2 KW. While the total cost of the system was around ₹1.35 lakh, government subsidies under the PM Surya Ghar Yojana covered ₹1.10 lakh, leaving only ₹25,000 to be contributed by the family. The support came as a great relief, making it possible for them to adopt a solution that would have otherwise been beyond their financial reach.
The benefits became visible within the first few months of installation. Earlier, Gayatri’s family paid an average electricity bill of around ₹925 every month, which consumed a considerable portion of their limited household income. Once the solar system became operational, it began generating electricity worth approximately ₹715 per month, reducing their payable bill to just ₹210. For Gayatri, the benefits extend beyond lower electricity bills. The solar system has given her family access to a cleaner and more reliable source of energy.
Her experience highlights the value of connecting rural households with government programs that improve access to clean energy and also help in savings.
“The savings may seem small, but for our family they make a big difference every month,” Gayatri happily expresses.
